Guidelines and rules for using the AustNet IRC network

Acceptable Use Policy

Introduction

AustNet is a privately-owned and operated IRC network that has been serving the global chat community since 1996. This Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) outlines the terms and conditions for using our network and services.

Network Philosophy

AustNet is a multicultural, conservative, and family-oriented network. We strive to maintain an environment that is welcoming to users of all ages and backgrounds. Our policies reflect our commitment to creating a safe and respectful space for everyone.

Acceptance of Terms

By connecting to the AustNet IRC network, you agree to comply with this AUP and all applicable laws and regulations. Failure to comply may result in temporary or permanent removal from the network.

General Rules

Prohibited Conduct

The following activities are strictly prohibited on the AustNet network:

  • Harassment and Abuse: Any form of harassment, threats, or abusive behavior toward other users
  • Hate Speech: Content that promotes hatred or discrimination based on race, religion, gender, nationality, or other characteristics
  • Adult Content: Sharing, linking to, or discussing explicit sexual content or pornography
  • Illegal Activities: Discussing or facilitating illegal activities, including software piracy, drug trafficking, or hacking
  • Spam and Flooding: Excessive posting, flooding channels, or sending unsolicited messages
  • Impersonation: Pretending to be another person, especially staff members or celebrities
  • Evasion: Attempting to circumvent network bans or restrictions

Nickname and Channel Guidelines

  • Nicknames must be appropriate and not offensive
  • Channel names and topics must be family-friendly
  • No advertising of competing IRC networks
  • No excessive use of colors, bold, or formatting in public channels

Channel Guidelines

Channel Registration

Channels can be registered through our ChanOP service. Registered channels have additional protections and management features.

Channel Management

  • Channel operators are responsible for maintaining order in their channels
  • Channel rules must comply with the network AUP
  • Idle channels may be subject to removal after extended periods of inactivity
  • Channel takeovers or disruption of services are prohibited

Public vs Private Channels

  • Public channels are subject to stricter content guidelines
  • Private channels have more flexibility but must still comply with basic network rules
  • Adult content is only permitted in clearly marked private channels with appropriate warnings

Bot Policy

Bot Registration

All bots operating on the AustNet network must be registered with network staff and comply with the following guidelines:

  • Bots must be clearly identified as automated programs
  • Bot owners are responsible for their bot's behavior
  • Bots must not flood channels or send unsolicited messages
  • Game bots and trivia bots are permitted with proper channel operator approval
  • Bots that facilitate illegal activities are strictly prohibited

Bot Limitations

  • Maximum of 3 bots per user without special permission
  • Bots must respond to CTCP VERSION requests
  • Idle bots may be removed at staff discretion

Enforcement

Warning System

For minor violations, users typically receive warnings before punitive action is taken. Repeated violations or serious offenses may result in immediate action.

Penalties

Depending on the severity and frequency of violations, the following actions may be taken:

  • Warning: Official notice of policy violation
  • Kick: Temporary removal from a channel
  • Channel Ban: Prohibition from accessing specific channels
  • Network Ban: Temporary or permanent removal from the entire network
  • Service Suspension: Loss of access to registered services

Ban Duration

  • Temporary bans typically range from 24 hours to 30 days
  • Permanent bans are reserved for serious or repeated violations
  • Ban duration depends on violation severity and user history

Appeals Process

Filing an Appeal

If you believe you have been unfairly punished, you may appeal the decision through the following process:

  1. Submit a Support Ticket: Visit support.austnet.org and provide details about your case
  2. Email Contact: Send an email to users@austnet.org with your appeal
  3. Provide Information: Include your nickname, the date of the incident, and explanation of why you believe the action was unjustified

Appeal Guidelines

  • Appeals must be submitted within 30 days of the incident
  • Be respectful and provide factual information
  • Additional violations during the appeal process may result in extended penalties
  • Appeal decisions are final and made at staff discretion
